PORT ARTHUR, TX – A Texas fisherman was killed when his boat capsized after colliding with a tugboat that was pushing four barges in Port Arthur, TX on july 7, 2013. Port Arthur is located in Jefferson County in the southeastern part of Texas on the border with Louisiana.
The victim was identified as John Tran, 56 years old from Bridge City, TX The city of Bridge City is located about 4 miles northwest from the site of the accident. Tran, who was well known in the community, was crabbing at the time of the incident.
The accident was originally reported to have occurred in the Sabine-Neches Ship Channel in Beaumont, TX – about 20 miles to the northwest, but this was incorrect. The accident actually took place in Port Arthur where Sabine Lake meets the Intracoastal Waterway. According to the Coast Guard, Tran was crabbing and his 17 foot boat collided with a tugboat pushing barges at about 2:30 p.m. Sunday, July 7, about 500 feet west of Goat Island near the mouth of the Intracoastal Waterway at Sabine Lake.”
Tran’s body was eventually found after more than 24 hours of searching by the Coast Guard, Sheriff’s Deputies and other first responders.
The incident remains under investigation at this time.
