Barge Crashes Into Protection Cell on BNSF Bridge in Burlington Iowa

BURLINGTON, IOWA — A barge accident took place on the east side of the BNSF bridge located in Burlington, Iowa this morning after a barge struck a protection cell on the bridge. A protection cell is designed to work as a buffer in order to protect the bridge from being hit.

Officials reported that the accident took place on July 1, 2013 at about 6:00 a.m. Monday morning. After the barge hit the cell, it came apart where the remaining pieces are still lying up against the bridge.

No structural damage or injuries were reported at the time of the incident.

The incident remains under investigation at this time.
