Travelers changing their plans as Gulf of Mexico oil spill moves east

* * * * *

The waters along the Gulf coast states have been immeasurably polluted by the Transocean Deepwater Horizon disaster and the subsequent oil spill. The disaster has impacted the fishing industry, tourism and waterway commerce along the coastal states. Damages have occurred and lawsuits will be flying. Cities in Alabama that may be affected include Mobile Bay, Gulf Shores and Orange Beach.
Due to the disaster, over 6,800 square miles of federal fishing areas have now been closed. From the mouth of the Mississippi River to the Florida Panhandle, the fishing industry has been barred from waters that they rely upon for their livelihood. Fishermen got the bad news that the waters have now been closed until further notice. Their livelihood has been fractured just when things started to go well for them. The prime spring season was just starting to kick in and now they are faced with this tremendous, man-made environmental disaster. The closure of the fishing waters will probably last for at least 10 days but it will likely continue for a longer time period.
